    Pros +

    • The staff was amazing. Very nice and helpful. We got a free concert and tea ceremony out of it too.
    • Exceptional service and friendly staff. Complimentary drinks, laundry, hand warmers, tea ceremony, recommendations and more. Our favorite ryokan we’ve stayed at in Japan. Located a short walk from the shopping street.
    • The room was comfortable and very clean. It was fun staying in traditional lodging. The lounging gown and beds were nice. My husband loved and enjoyed the public baths. It was nice having access to water, tea, drinks as needed. We enjoyed the tea ceremony the hotel offered.

    Cons -

    • The location was great for central Kyoto but it was not as close to the Kyoto station as I thuoght it was. Still manageable to get to other stations though. Price is a bit higher than we wanted to pay.
    • I would have liked lotion and a disposable shower cap in our room.
    • Cannot get hot enough water for shower. Highest is probably 39-40 C. I end up getting cold bc of that and AC (heat) blowing right to my face the whole night.Their onsen has hotter shower tho. Only learned after the first night.

Good location. Lots of restaurants nearby to explore. Close to attractions. Staff is very friendly introducing all the facilities when we arrived. Some special cultural events available but we didn’t go

Friendly and kind staff. We were welcomed with tea and shown to our room. I celebrated a birthday over the time we were traveling end they went above and beyond with a small gift and song. The rooms were very clean and quiet. We enjoyed our stay.

    Nothing!

Japanese bath was so relaxing. Tea ceremony was very memorable. We felt very welcome from the time we entered to the time we checked out. A true Japanese experience.

Excellent traditional family-run ryokan on a quiet side street a few blocks from major shopping. Beautiful garden, quiet and comfortable room, helpful friendly staff. Small entertainments offered (koto concert, tea ceremony, walking tour). We would return for sure when in Kyoto again.

Hard to think of anything. Pretty much perfect.

It was a wonderful hotel in Kyoto that delivered the authentic and loving experience of this city. This Rio con is family run and dedicated to customer service. Quaint traditional with the tatamimat, onsen on site, unbelievable breakfasts. This is our best hotel and one of the only ways we plugged in with true authenticity to Kyoto

There was absolutely nothing not to like. From the moment we walked in to the moment, the staff wished us well as we departed. It was a truly authentic, enjoyable, honorable, throwback experience of Japan.

Room was lovely.Breakfast was delightful, both very delicious and beautifully presented.Service was gracious and helpful.

There was nothing about this property that we didn't like. It exceeded our expectations.

Onsen was clean and we were the only users each morning. Lobby area was convenient with effective WiFi that let me complete multiple calls for work while traveling. Coffee/beverages were also plentiful and staff was friendly; laundry facilities were another benefit as this was mid-way stop on our trip.

    No issues or changes.

Nishiyama is located in very convenient area of city-easy to get subway and walk to many sites. Also there is a bike rental store right around the corner. Different types of Japanese breakfasts are served on different days which allow you to experience a variety of different local foods. Onsen is very clean and enjoyable. There is a free tea ceremony each morning and different free activities offered on some days and evenings. Highly recommend!

Laundry was very popular so difficult to find a free time to use.

The staff, the onsen, the breakfast, the tea ceremony, the room, and the location - all fantastic.

    Nothing, all great

    10JazminPosted on: 9-26-2025

Great location. Relaxing atmosphere. Onsen was necessary after long day of travel

    10LynnPosted on: 9-18-2025

Wonderful accommodations, great classic Japanese public bath (in addition to clean bright spacious bath and shower in your room). A free washer dryer and delicious breakfasts add to the joy. There’s a small Japanese garden and there are Japanese tea ceremonies in the morning and classical Japanese entertainment on occasional evenings.

The staff were excellent! Super attentive, kind, and helpful. Great tattoo friendly Onsen on property as well as a tea ceremony with the owners of the hotel who are the sweetest people. Great experience.

Beautiful traditional ryokan. Great staff. Attention to detail.

Not inexpensive. But good value for the money.

Beautiful rooms, nice location, very kind and attentive staff. They do free matcha ceremony in the mornings and they surprised us with printed pictures! I liked the public bath, me and my boyfriend used it most nights.

    10BatoolPosted on: 7-25-2025

A truly unique and authentic Japanese experience. From the level of service to the clean and well maintained facilities and activities, they truly care about the details. They made our stay special and we truly felt at home. We loved the tea ceremony in the morning and the clean and tranquil bath at the basement. They also have a laundry room that’s free to use for guests. Everyone was so nice and accommodating!

The Nishiyama Ryokan made our trip to Kyoto so special! The staff were incredibly welcoming and caring. They provided a lovely place to stay while teaching us about Japanese traditions and culture. They hosted us for two tea ceremonies that were very informative and inclusive. The gathering area/lobby and our room were beautiful me impeccable with attention to detail. I am expressing my utmost gratitude and highest recommendation for you to stay here!
